It is a silvery-gray color. It is one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust. We find it mostly in ores for copper and molybdenum.

This metal can stand very high heat. It has one of the highest melting points of any element. It is also very heavy and dense. Because it stays strong in heat, we use it in jet engines.

It helps make parts like turbine blades and exhaust nozzles. These parts are made of superalloys. A superalloy is a very strong metal mix. These mixes can contain up to 6% rhenium.

Rhenium also works as a catalyst. A catalyst is something that helps a chemical change happen faster. It is used to help make gasoline.

Scientists first found rhenium in 1908. A man named Masataka Ogawa found it. He thought it was a different element at first. Later, three scientists in Germany found it again in 1925. They gave it the name rhenium. They named it after the Rhine River in Europe.
