Rhenium is a very rare and heavy metal.

It is a silvery-gray color in its natural state. This element is one of the rarest things in the Earth's crust. It has an average concentration of only 1 part per billion. Most of the rhenium we use comes from molybdenum and copper ores.

It is often found in a mineral called molybdenite. Because it is so hard to find, rhenium is very expensive. In 2008, the price reached a high of $10,600 per kilogram.

This metal is special because it can handle extreme heat. It has one of the highest melting points of all elements. Only tungsten has a higher melting point. It also has one of the highest boiling points. This makes it perfect for very hot machines.

Rhenium is often mixed with nickel to make superalloys. These strong metal mixes are used in jet engines. They are used for turbine blades and exhaust nozzles. These parts must stay strong even when they are glowing hot.

Scientists have a long history of studying this element. A Japanese chemist named Masataka Ogawa first found it in 1908. He mistakenly thought it was element 43. He named his discovery nipponium after Japan. Later, three scientists in Germany found it again in 1925. They were Walter Noddack, Ida Tacke, and Otto Berg. They gave it the name rhenium. They named it after the Rhine River in Europe.

Aside from engines, rhenium works as a catalyst. A catalyst is something that helps a chemical change happen faster. Rhenium is great for processes like hydrogenation. It is also used in a process called rheniforming. This helps turn naphtha into gasoline for cars.

The metal can be found in many different forms. It can be a powder or a solid block. It can even be found in a rare mineral called rheniite. This mineral grows near a volcano in the Kuril Islands.

Think about the powerful engines on a large airplane. Those engines rely on the strength of rhenium to fly safely. Without this metal, the parts might melt or break under pressure. It is also like a helper in a kitchen. Just as a catalyst helps a recipe work faster, rhenium helps make fuel. Even though it is rare, it plays a huge role in our modern world.
