Rhodium is a very rare and special metal.

It is a hard, silvery-white metal that does not rust easily. Scientists call it a noble metal because it resists corrosion from most chemicals. It belongs to the platinum group, which is a family of similar metals. You can find it in ores alongside platinum or nickel. Because it is so hard to find, it is one of the most valuable metals on Earth.

This metal works as a catalyst in many important ways. A catalyst is something that helps a chemical change happen faster. Most rhodium is used in cars inside a part called a three-way catalytic converter.

This part uses rhodium to turn harmful exhaust gases into safer ones. It specifically helps reduce nitrogen oxide, which is known as NOx. About 80% of all rhodium produced in the world goes into making these car parts. It is also used to help make things like detergents and medicines.

A scientist named William Hyde Wollaston discovered rhodium in 1803.

He found it while studying platinum ore from South America. He named the metal after a rose color. He saw this color in one of the chemical compounds he made. To find the pure metal, he used a careful step-by-step process. He dissolved the ore in a strong liquid and used zinc to separate the metals. This was a very difficult job because rhodium is so rare.

Finding rhodium is a very hard task for miners. It is one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust. There is less than one part per billion of it in the ground. Most of the world's rhodium comes from South Africa. Other amounts come from Russia and Zimbabwe. The amount produced each year stays around 30 tonnes. Because it is so rare, the price can change a lot.

In July 2022, the price reached $14,197.

You might see rhodium used in things you wear every day. Jewelers use a process called plating to make jewelry look better. They put a thin layer of rhodium over white gold to make it shiny. They also use it on sterling silver to stop it from tarnishing. This helps the silver stay bright for a long time. Rhodium is also used in science to study nuclear reactors. It helps scientists measure the level of neutrons in the reactor.
