Three of these metals are found in nature. Zinc, cadmium, and mercury are all used in electronics. They can also be mixed with other metals to make alloys. An alloy is a mix of two or more metals.

Zinc and cadmium are solid metals. They are often a bluish-white color. Zinc is very important for living things. However, cadmium and mercury are highly toxic. This means they can be poisonous.

Mercury is very different from the others. It is a heavy, silvery metal. It is the only common metal that is a liquid at room temperature. Because it is a liquid, it can dissolve other metals. These special mixes are called amalgams.

Copernicium is the last metal in the group. It does not occur in nature. Scientists must make it in a lab. We do not yet know if it is a liquid or a gas.
