Reactivity series

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Metals are not all the same. Some are very busy. Others are very quiet. Scientists use a reactivity series to show this. This is a list of metals. It ranks them from most reactive to least reactive.

Reactivity tells us how easily a metal changes. High reactivity means the metal changes fast. It might react with cold water. Sodium is a very reactive metal. It reacts with cold water to make hydrogen gas.

Other metals are a bit slower. Magnesium reacts very slowly with cold water. It reacts faster with boiling water. Some metals only react with strong acids. Iron is one of these metals.

At the bottom of the list are quiet metals. Gold and platinum are very low. They do not change easily.

This list helps us in many ways. It helps us find metals in rocks. It also shows how to get pure metal. We can use a way called electrolysis. This uses power to pull metal out of its parts.
