Base metal

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Most metals are easy to find. They do not cost much money. We call these base metals. They are not like gold or silver. Gold and silver are precious metals.

Base metals can change easily. They may rust or corrode. This means they wear down in the air. Some base metals react with acid. They can make hydrogen, which is a gas.

Iron is a base metal. Nickel is another one. Lead and zinc are also in this group. Copper is a base metal too. It can rust easily. But copper does not react with acid.

In mining, people use this term for many metals. They look for metals that are not precious. This includes copper, lead, nickel, and zinc.

Sometimes, a base metal is hidden. It can sit under a thin layer of silver. This is called plating. The base metal stays underneath. The shiny metal stays on top. This helps make items look very nice.
