It was a rigid airship used for carrying passengers. This ship was the largest airship of its kind. It was much longer than other flying machines. The airship was filled with hydrogen gas to help it float. This gas allowed the giant ship to stay in the sky. People thought these huge ships were the future of travel.

On May 6, 1937, the Hindenburg tried to land in New Jersey. It was flying toward the Lakehurst Naval Air Station. The ship was a little late because of bad weather. Captain Max Pruss steered the ship through the clouds. The crew used a method called a flying moor. They dropped ropes from a high altitude to catch a pole. This helped them pull the ship down to the ground.

Many people were there to see the landing. News crews were filming the arrival with their cameras. A man named Herbert Morrison was there too. He spoke into a radio to report what he saw. His voice was recorded for a broadcast the next day. This recording helped people hear about the event later. Other photographers like Sam Shere took famous pictures.

This accident changed how the world thought about travel. Before this, many people believed in big passenger airships. After the fire, people lost their confidence in them. This event marked the end of the airship era. Most people began to look toward airplanes for long trips instead. The history of flight changed forever because of this day.
