Airship

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An airship is a special kind of aircraft called an aerostat. This means it stays in the sky using buoyancy. It uses a gas that is less dense than the air around it. This gas provides the lift needed to stay airborne. Unlike a regular balloon, an airship can navigate through the air. It uses its own power to fly where it wants to go.

How an airship works depends on its many parts. The largest part is the envelope, which holds the lifting gas. Below the envelope, a gondola is suspended to hold the crew and engines. To change how high they fly, pilots use ballonets. These are air bags inside the main envelope. When a ballonet is filled with air, it takes up space. This makes the gas inside more dense and reduces lift.

History shows that airships were the first aircraft to fly with control. Many people used them before aeroplanes became more common. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin was a famous pioneer of rigid airships. His company, Luftschiffbau Zeppelin, built many of these large crafts. Because of his work, people often call rigid airships zeppelins. These ships had a strong framework to keep their shape.

There are three main types of airship designs. Non-rigid airships are often called blimps. They rely on gas pressure to keep their shape. Semi-rigid airships have a small support structure like a keel. Rigid airships have a full outer framework to carry all the weight.

Early ships used hydrogen because it was easy to find. However, hydrogen is very flammable and caused many accidents. The Hindenburg burned in 1937, which made hydrogen ships obsolete. Now, most airships use helium because it is not flammable.

Today, airships are used for very different jobs than before. They are great for things that need a long time in the air. People use them for tourism and for taking photos from above. They are also used for geological surveys and aerial observation. Some airships even help with advertising. Even though they are not as fast as planes, they can hover for a long time.
