Airships stay up using a lifting gas. This gas is less dense than the air. This means it is lighter than the air around it.

Early airships used hydrogen. Hydrogen is easy to find and lifts well. But hydrogen can catch fire very easily. This led to many sad accidents. Most airships now use helium. Helium is a safe gas that does not burn. However, helium is rare and costs a lot of money.

Airships have two main parts. The big top part is the envelope. This holds the lifting gas. The bottom part is the gondola. A gondola is a small car for the crew. It also holds the engines and the cargo.

There are three main kinds of airships. Non-rigid airships are called blimps. They stay shaped by gas pressure. Semi-rigid airships have a small frame for support. Rigid airships have a strong outer frame. These are often called zeppelins.
