Umberto Nobile was a famous Italian engineer and explorer.

He spent much of his life studying how things fly. Nobile was an expert in aeronautical engineering, which is the science of designing aircraft. He focused on a special type of aircraft called a semi-rigid airship. These ships use a strong frame to help them keep their shape in the air. Nobile believed these designs were better than other types of airships. His work helped change how people thought about flying over long distances.

Nobile's most famous achievement happened during a massive trip to the North Pole.

In 1926, he worked with the explorer Roald Amundsen. They used an airship named the Norge to reach the icy North Pole. The Norge was a very special ship for its time. It may have been the first aircraft to ever reach the Pole. It was also the first to fly all the way across the polar ice cap. This long journey went from Europe all the way to America.

Nobile had a very busy career before his famous polar trips. He was born in Lauro, Italy, in 1885. He graduated from the University of Naples in 1908 with an engineering degree. During World War I, he worked as a military engineer in Rome. He even designed the first parachute made in Italy in 1918. Later, he worked with others to design the Caproni Ca.73, the first all-metal aircraft from Italy.

He also worked as a consultant for a company in Ohio, USA.

In 1928, Nobile planned another big trip using a ship called the Italia. This airship was almost exactly like the Norge he used before. The Italia flew toward the North Pole in May of 1928. However, the ship ran into a very bad storm. The Italia crashed onto the thick ice near Svalbard. This crash was a very serious event for the crew. Ten men were thrown onto the ice while six others were trapped in the ship's upper parts. One man died from the impact of the crash.

After the crash, many different countries joined a huge rescue effort. This included the Soviet Union, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Italy. Even Roald Amundsen tried to help by flying a plane to the rescue. Sadly, Amundsen's plane disappeared and he was never found. Nobile was eventually rescued by a Swedish plane. He had many injuries, like a broken leg and arm. Even after he was safe, he faced many hard jobs and arguments with leaders in Italy. He lived until 1978, leaving behind a long history of flight.
