He was born in Borge in 1872. His parents were Jens Amundsen and Hanna Sahlqvist. His mother wanted him to study to be a doctor. Amundsen kept that promise for a few years. He stayed in university until his mother died. After that, he left school to live at sea. He loved reading about Arctic trips when he was young. These stories shaped his whole life.

Amundsen learned many skills during his early trips. In 1897, he was the first mate on a Belgian expedition.

This ship, the Belgica, got stuck in the ice. The crew had to stay in Antarctica for a long winter. Amundsen saw how they survived by eating fresh meat. In 1903, he led a trip through the Northwest Passage.

He used a small ship named the Gjøa. He spent two winters at King William Island. There, he learned survival skills from the Netsilik Inuit. They taught him to use sled dogs and wear animal skins.

His most famous trip was to the South Pole. In 1910, he left Norway on a ship called the Fram.

He reached Antarctica in January 1911. His team set up a camp at the Bay of Whales. They used skis and many sled dogs to travel. Amundsen also used fur clothing instead of heavy wool. On 14 December 1911, his team of five reached the pole. They arrived one month before a group led by Robert Scott. This success made him a hero in Norway.

Amundsen also explored the North Pole in different ways. He tried to use a ship named the Maud in 1918.

This trip through the Northeast Passage was very hard. The ice was very thick and the ship got stuck. Amundsen even suffered a broken arm during this time. Later, he decided to try flying instead of sailing. On 12 May 1926, he flew over the North Pole. He and 15 other men used an airship called the Norge. This was the first verified trip to the North Pole.

Flying became a big part of his later life.

He used planes to explore the frozen lands. In June 1928, he went on a rescue mission. He was flying a plane in the Arctic to help others. Sadly, Amundsen disappeared during this flight. People searched for him, but they did not find him. The search for his remains ended in September 1928. His many journeys changed how we understand the polar regions.
