He is best known for leading two large trips to Antarctica. His first trip was called the Discovery expedition from 1901 to 1904. His second trip was the Terra Nova expedition from 1910 to 1913. Scott was born in 1868 in a family with many naval traditions.

He began his naval career as a young cadet in 1881. His life changed when he met Sir Clements Markham in the West Indies. Markham was a leader in the Royal Geographical Society. He saw Scott's skill and later helped him lead polar trips.

Scott's first big trip used the ship Discovery.

During this time, Scott and his team marched very far south. They reached a latitude of 82 degrees South. This journey helped them find the Antarctic Plateau. The Plateau is a high, flat area where the South Pole sits. They also found fossils of a tree called Glossopteris.

These fossils were very important for science. They proved that Antarctica was once covered in forests. This showed that the continent was once joined to other lands.

On his second trip, Scott led a team on the ship Terra Nova.

This mission had a goal to reach the South Pole. On January 17, 1912, Scott and four other men finally arrived there. They reached the Pole less than five weeks after an explorer named Amundsen. The journey to the Pole was a great achievement for the team.

However, the trip back home became very difficult. The weather turned extremely cold during their return. They faced many hard jobs while traveling across the ice.

Scott and his four companions died on the journey back from the Pole.

A planned meeting with dog teams failed to happen. Scott had left written instructions for the dogs to help them.

Sadly, the team died some distance from their base at Hut Point. Some people later questioned if Scott was a good leader. They looked at his choices and his character. However, new studies show how cold the weather actually was in March 1912. Scientists found that the temperature dropped very low during that time.

After he died, many people in the UK saw Scott as a hero.

Many memorials were built to remember his work. His name is now closely tied to the history of Antarctica. His discovery of fossils changed how we see the world. We now know that the frozen south was once a green place. Scott's life shows the hard work of early explorers. He remained committed to the Antarctic until the very end.
