Sir James Clark Ross was a famous explorer and a leader in the Royal Navy.

He was born in London in 1800. His uncle, John Ross, helped him join the Navy when he was only eleven years old. Ross spent much of his life sailing to the coldest parts of our world. He explored the icy Arctic in the north and the freezing Antarctic in the south. He was very interested in how magnetism works. His many trips helped people understand the Earth much better.

In the Arctic, Ross learned a lot about magnetism and nature. He went on several trips with his uncle and with a man named William Edward Parry. One of his biggest discoveries happened on June 1, 1831.

He led a small group to find the North Magnetic Pole. This is a special spot on the Boothia Peninsula in Canada. Ross even planted a British flag there to mark the place. He also mapped out islands that his uncle later renamed the Clarence Islands. These trips taught him how to navigate through thick, frozen seas.

From 1839 to 1843, Ross led his own big trip to the Antarctic. He used two special ships named Erebus and Terror.

These were bomb vessels with very strong hulls. This strength helped them push through heavy ice without breaking. His friend, Francis Crozier, served as his second-in-command. They traveled to many places like Cape Town and Hobart to prepare. During this time, they crossed the Antarctic Circle on January 1, 1841. This was a huge step into the deep south.

Ross found many new lands and features during his southern voyage. He discovered the Ross Sea and a place called Victoria Land. He also found Ross Island, which has two volcanoes named Mount Erebus and Mount Terror.

His crew saw a massive, flat ice shelf that they called the Great Ice Barrier. Today, we call it the Ross Ice Shelf to honor him. Ross also found islands named Snow Hill and Seymour Island. While he did not reach the South Magnetic Pole, he found exactly where it was. His team even made the first accurate magnetic maps of the Antarctic.

Later in life, Ross tried to find a lost explorer named John Franklin.

He led a search mission in 1848 with his ships. He reached the tip of Somerset Island but got stuck in heavy ice. Even though he could not find Franklin, Ross remained a respected leader. He was later named a knight and became a Rear-Admiral. Many things in the world carry his name today. You can find Ross Bay, the Ross Sea, and even a crater on the Moon named after him.
