He traveled across the high Andes mountains to reach the ancient city of Cuzco. On his journey, he crossed a swinging bridge over the Apurimac River. In the mountains, he learned about the cinchona plant.

This plant is very important because it can make quinine. Quinine is a medicine used to treat sickness. Markham wanted to help people get this medicine more easily.

Markham worked hard to move cinchona plants from Peru to India. He worked for the India Office to make this happen. By planting them in India, the government found a steady way to get quinine. He also worked as a geographer for other important groups and people. For example, he worked for a force led by Sir Robert Napier.
