He is known for many amazing endurance records. He was born in Windsor, Berkshire, on 7 March 1944. His father was a Lieutenant-Colonel who died before Ranulph was born. This meant Ranulph became a baronet at birth. He spent part of his childhood in South Africa. Later, he went to school at Eton College. He spent eight years serving in the British Army. During this time, he worked with the Sultanate of Oman.

Ranulph has led many difficult journeys across the Earth. Between 1979 and 1982, he led the Transglobe Expedition. He and two others traveled around the world's polar axis. They used only surface transport for the whole trip. This was a journey no one else had ever done before. In 1992, he led a trip that found a possible outpost of the lost city of Iram. In 1993, he and Mike Stroud crossed Antarctica on foot. This trek took them 93 days to complete. They did this without any outside help or support.

He has also reached the highest and coldest places. Ranulph was the first person to visit both the North and South Poles by surface means. He also became the first person to climb Mount Everest and cross both polar ice-caps. He reached the top of Mount Everest in May 2009. He was 65 years old when he achieved this goal.

He even climbed the North Face of the Eiger in 2007. This was a hard job because he has a fear of heights. He did it to raise money for charity.

Some of his trips were very hard on his body. While trying to reach the North Pole, he got severe frostbite. The tips of his left fingers were damaged by the cold. He eventually had to have his fingertips removed.

In 2003, he took part in the Land Rover 7x7x7 Challenge. He ran seven marathons in seven days on seven different continents. He did this to help the British Heart Foundation. He ran in places like Patagonia, Australia, and London. This was very hard because he had a heart operation just months before.

Ranulph is also a very busy writer. He has written 24 books about his life and adventures. Some of his books are stories that he made up. Other books are about real explorers like Robert Falcon Scott.

He also writes about the life of Ernest Shackleton. He even appeared on the TV show Top Gear. People often compare his brave spirit to other famous explorers. He continues to stay active by running in the UK today.
