He is widely recognized for holding numerous endurance records. In 1984, the founding editor of the Guinness Book of Records named him the greatest living explorer. His life has been defined by extreme physical challenges and massive journeys. He has pushed the limits of human capability in the coldest parts of the world. Fiennes has also used his fame to support various charitable causes through his expeditions.

Fiennes' early life was marked by significant responsibility and change. He was born in Windsor, Berkshire, on 7 March 1944. His father, a Lieutenant-Colonel, died four months before his birth. Because of this, Fiennes inherited his father's title at birth. He became the 3rd Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes baronet immediately. His mother later moved the family to South Africa. He lived there until he was 12 years old. He attended Western Province Preparatory School in Cape Town before returning to the UK for education at Eton College.

Before his career as an explorer, Fiennes served in the British Army for eight years. He joined the Royal Scots Greys in 1963 after training at Mons Officer Cadet School. He was later seconded to the Special Air Service (SAS). In the SAS, he specialized in demolitions, which is the study of explosives. His military career included a period of service in Oman. He commanded the Reconnaissance Platoon of the Muscat Regiment during the Dhofar War. He led raids into rebel-held territory on the Djebel Dhofar. For his bravery during this service, he was decorated by the Sultanate.

Fiennes' expeditions are famous for their extreme difficulty and unique methods. Between 1979 and 1982, he led the Transglobe Expedition. He and two others traveled around the world's polar axis. They used only surface transport for the entire journey. This was a feat no one else had accomplished by any route. During this trip, Fiennes and his teammate Charles R. Burton completed the Northwest Passage. They used an 18 ft open Boston Whaler to travel 3,000 miles. This was the first open boat transit from West to East. They traveled through several straits and bays, including the Franklin Strait and Norwegian Bay.

He has achieved several historic firsts regarding the Earth's poles and mountains. Fiennes was the first person to visit both the North Pole and South Pole by surface means. In 1993, he and Mike Stroud became the first to cross Antarctica unsupported. This means they traveled for 93 days without outside help. In May 2009, at age 65, he reached the summit of Mount Everest. This made him the first person to climb Everest and cross both polar ice-caps.

He also completed the Land Rover 7x7x7 Challenge in 2003. This involved running seven marathons in seven days on seven different continents. He did this to support the British Heart Foundation.

Extreme environments have often caused serious physical harm to Fiennes. During a 2000 attempt to reach the North Pole solo, his sleds fell through weak ice. He suffered severe frostbite on the tips of all fingers on his left hand. The tissue became necrotic, which means the cells had died. His surgeon required the damaged fingertips to remain for several months. Eventually, the fingertips were amputated.

He also faced health challenges during his climbing career. In 2005, heart problems forced him to turn back from a climb on Mount Everest. In 2013, frostbite forced him to withdraw from the Coldest Journey expedition in Antarctica.

Beyond physical exploration, Fiennes is a prolific author and public figure. He has written 24 books, including fiction and non-fiction works. He has written biographies about famous explorers like Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton.

His writing often explores the history and reputation of these men. Fiennes has also appeared in popular media, such as the television program Top Gear. He was once a final contender for the role of James Bond. Today, he remains active by participating in mountain marathon races in the UK. He continues to train with regular runs around Exmoor.
