He is widely recognized for his expertise in wilderness survival and his many television series. These programs include *Man vs. Wild*, *Running Wild with Bear Grylls*, and *The Island with Bear Grylls*. Grylls has also served as a leader in the Scouting movement. In July 2009, he became the youngest-ever Chief Scout of the United Kingdom and Overseas Territories. He held this position until September 2024. This tenure made him the second-longest-serving Chief Scout after Robert Baden-Powell.

Grylls's life has been defined by intense physical training and diverse skills. Born in Northern Ireland in 1974, he moved to the Isle of Wight as a child. He learned to sail and climb alongside his father. During his teenage years, he mastered skydiving and earned a second dan black belt in Shotokan karate. He is also a polyglot, speaking English, Spanish, German, and French. His academic background includes studying Hispanic studies at the University of the West of England and Birkbeck College.

His military career included service as a trooper with the 21 SAS from 1994 to 1997. This period of service was interrupted by a life-altering accident in Zambia in 1996. During a free fall parachuting exercise, his parachute failed to open. He fell from 16,000 feet and broke three vertebrae. This fall remains one of the highest altitudes survived without a parachute. Despite this injury, Grylls demonstrated remarkable resilience. On May 16, 1998, he reached the summit of Mount Everest in Nepal. At age 23, he was among the youngest people to achieve this feat.

He reached an altitude of almost 23,000 feet while enduring extremely low oxygen levels. In 2008, he set a record for the longest continuous indoor freefall. Using a vertical wind tunnel in Milton Keynes, he and two others stayed airborne for over one hour and 36 minutes.
