His creative output has earned him 10 Primetime Emmy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Burnett's journey to television began with a series of very different jobs. After moving from London to the United States in 1982, he worked as a live-in nanny for a family in Beverly Hills. He later worked for a family in Malibu, earning $250 per week to care for two boys. He eventually moved into an insurance office role. However, he found a new opportunity selling T-shirts at Venice Beach for $18 each. This entrepreneurial spirit helped him transition into the world of media.

His entry into television production was sparked by an adventure competition. In 1991, Burnett participated in a French competition called the Raid Gauloises. He recognized the potential for similar competitions in America. He purchased the rights to a format and launched the Eco-Challenge in 1995. This expedition race show served as the foundation for his later successes. It directly led to the creation of the massive hit series Survivor in the year 2000. Survivor became a cultural phenomenon and was called the number one reality series of all time by Entertainment Weekly in 2009.

Burnett has developed many distinct types of television franchises. Some of his most famous works include the competition show Shark Tank and the talent competition The Voice. He also produced The Apprentice, which featured contestants competing for a job under Donald Trump. Beyond competition, Burnett and his wife, Roma Downey, focus on faith-based scripted series. They produced The Bible, a ten-hour drama on the History Channel. This series became the number one new series on cable TV in 2013. It reached more than 100 million viewers worldwide. They also created series such as A.D. The Bible Continues and The Dovekeepers.

His professional life has included significant leadership roles in major media corporations. In 2009, he founded Lightworkers Media with Roma Downey to focus on Christian media. He served as the president of United Artists Media Group from 2014 to 2018. Later, he held the position of chairman of MGM Worldwide Television Group from 2018 to 2022. During his time at MGM, he oversaw many successful shows like Vikings and The Handmaid's Tale. As of 2024, he continues to work as an executive producer on several network shows, including Generation Gap and Beat Shazam.

Burnett's personal history is as diverse as his professional career. He grew up in East London and attended an Anglican parochial school. Before entering media, he volunteered for the British Army's 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment. He served for five years in locations including Northern Ireland and the Falkland Islands. His religious views have also evolved over time. While he grew up in a household with both Catholic and Presbyterian influences, he and Downey now describe themselves as non-denominational Christians. They are known for attending many different types of churches across the United States.

Beyond entertainment, Burnett is involved in various philanthropic efforts. He supports organizations such as Operation Smile and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. He also helps the Malibu Foundation with wildfire relief. Together with Downey, he established the Cradle of Christianity Fund. This fund aims to assist Christian refugees and support pluralism in the Middle East. In 2024, his career moved into a new area when President Donald Trump appointed him as the United States Special Envoy to the United Kingdom.
