His career spans several decades of media history. He has worked extensively in print journalism and television. He is known for his outspoken views and controversial commentary. These qualities often spark intense public debate. His professional journey reflects the changing landscape of the British and American media industries.

Morgan's career began in the print industry during the late 1980s. In 1988, he started as a freelance writer for The Sun. He wrote for a show business column titled "Bizarre." In this role, he became known as the "Friend of the Stars." He frequently interacted with famous figures like Madonna and Paul McCartney. This period helped him build a reputation for self-publicity. By 1994, he moved into major leadership roles within the news industry.

His rise through the ranks of British newspapers was very rapid. In 1994, Rupert Murdoch appointed him editor of the News of the World. At only 29 years old, he was the youngest editor of a British national newspaper in over fifty years. He later became the editor of the Daily Mirror in 1995. During his time at the Mirror, he led a large rebranding project. This project cost £16 million and included changing the paper's masthead. However, his leadership at the Mirror ended in 2004.

Several specific events led to his departure from major newspaper roles. In 2004, Morgan was fired from the Daily Mirror. This happened after the paper published fake photographs. The images allegedly showed British Army soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners. Official sources later confirmed the photos were crude fakes taken in North-West England. Morgan refused to apologize to the head of Trinity Mirror, Sly Bailey. This refusal resulted in his dismissal with immediate effect.

Morgan's career has also been shaped by legal and ethical inquiries. He faced scrutiny regarding phone hacking during his time as an editor. In 2011, he testified at the Leveson Inquiry. This was a judicial inquiry into the culture and practices of the British press. While Morgan denied hacking phones, the inquiry chair, Brian Leveson, found his testimony unpersuasive. A 2023 court case later found evidence that Morgan knew about private phone hacking. The court found he had shared hacking methods and heard private messages in the newsroom.

As a television presenter, Morgan has hosted many different types of programs. He hosted the ITV talk show Piers Morgan's Life Stories from 2009 to 2020. He also presented Piers Morgan Live on CNN between 2011 and 2014. In the UK, he co-presented Good Morning Britain from 2015 to 2021. His time on that show ended in March 2021. This followed his criticism of an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan, and Harry. Ofcom received over 57,000 complaints regarding his comments. However, Ofcom eventually cleared him of wrongdoing.

He later took his stepfather's surname, Pughe-Morgan. He was educated at Cumnor House, Chailey School, and Priory School. After working at Lloyd's of London, he studied journalism at Harlow College. This foundation led to his long career in the global media spotlight.
