He spent his career pushing the limits of human capability through daring aerial stunts. Baumgartner was born in Salzburg, Austria, to his mother, Eva. As a child, he dreamed of flying and skydiving. He later trained in the Austrian military to practice parachute jumping. This training included learning to land on very small target zones. His life was defined by a constant desire to explore the sky.

Baumgartner performed many unique and dangerous stunts throughout his professional career. In 1999, he set a world record by jumping from the Petronas Towers in Malaysia. In 2003, he became the first person to skydive across the English Channel. For this feat, he used a special carbon fiber wing known as a SKYRAY.

He also completed a very low BASE jump from the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. In 2004, he was the first to BASE jump from the Millau Viaduct in France. He also jumped from the Turning Torso building in Sweden and the Taipei 101 building in Taiwan.

His most significant achievement was the Red Bull Stratos project. This project involved working with scientists and Red Bull GmbH to attempt a record-breaking high-altitude jump. Baumgartner had to prepare for the intense physical and mental demands of the mission. He initially struggled with claustrophobia while using the required pressurized suit. To overcome this, he worked with a sports psychologist and other specialists. The project required a massive helium balloon to lift a capsule and a person into the stratosphere.

The mechanism of the Stratos jump was highly complex and required careful testing. Baumgartner completed two test jumps from high altitudes in 2012 to prepare. During the first test on March 15, he spent 3 minutes and 43 seconds in free fall. He reached speeds of over 322 kilometers per hour before opening his parachute. The second test on July 25 took about 90 minutes to reach the target altitude. On October 14, 2012, the main jump finally took place after weather delays. Baumgartner jumped from a record altitude of 38,969.3 meters.

During his descent, Baumgartner achieved several incredible world records. He fell through the air for 4 minutes and 19 seconds. This descent was 17 seconds faster than the record set by Joseph Kittinger in 1960. Most importantly, he reached a top speed of Mach 1.25. This speed is approximately 1,534 kilometers per hour. By reaching this velocity, he became the first human to break the sound barrier without the power of a vehicle. He landed safely in eastern New Mexico after parachuting the final 10 kilometers.

Beyond skydiving, Baumgartner also ventured into professional motorsports. In 2014, he joined Audi Motorsport to participate in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. He underwent intense physical and driver training to prepare for the race. He drove an Audi R8 LMS and helped his team achieve a ninth-place overall finish. This transition showed his ability to apply intense discipline to different high-speed environments. His career was marked by these diverse and high-stakes pursuits.

Baumgartner's life ended in July 2025 during a powered paragliding flight in Italy. He was 56 years old at the time of the accident. An investigation by the attorney general concluded that the crash was caused by human error. The paraglider itself was found to be in perfect condition with no defects.
