Born Johann "Hans" Hölzel on February 19, 1957, he became a central figure in European pop music. He is best known for blending German lyrics with rap and pop elements. This unique style helped him break through global music markets. His estate reports that he sold 20 million albums and 40 million singles. These numbers make him the best-selling Austrian singer in history. His career bridged the gap between the underground club scenes of Vienna and the global mainstream.

Music was a central part of Hölzel's life from a very early age. As a toddler, he could keep time with drumbeats heard on the radio. He received a child's grand piano for his fourth birthday. By age five, he had a record player to listen to artists like Elvis Presley and the Beatles. He eventually attended the Vienna Conservatoire at age 16, though he left shortly after. He also served eight months in the Austrian army at age seventeen. These early experiences shaped his disciplined yet experimental approach to performance.

Falco's professional journey began in the Viennese nightlife scene of the late 1970s. He initially played bass guitar in several bands using various pseudonyms. He performed under names such as "John Hudson" and "John DiFalco." In 1977, he played with the Austrian rock group Spinning Wheel. It was during this time that he adopted the stage name Falco. He eventually moved from being a bass player to a lead vocalist. This transition allowed him to develop the distinct singing style that would define his solo career.

In 1981, Falco became a solo artist after leaving group performances. He began collaborating with songwriter Robert Ponger to compose his music. Their first major success was the single "Der Kommissar." This track was unique because it combined rap verses with a sung chorus. While it was a number-one hit in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Japan, it did not initially break into the U.S. market. However, the song's influence was widespread, leading to English-language covers by artists like the British band After the Fire and American singer Laura Branigan.

To expand his international appeal, Falco later worked with Dutch producers Rob and Ferdi Bolland. This partnership led to his most significant global breakthrough in 1986. He recorded "Rock Me Amadeus," a song inspired by the film *Amadeus*. This track reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. This achievement made Falco the only artist in history to score a number-one hit in the U.S. with a song in the German language. The song stayed at the top of the American charts for three weeks.

Despite his professional triumphs, Falco faced significant personal challenges. He struggled with addiction to alcohol and cocaine throughout the 1980s and 1990s. These issues often made him unreliable or difficult to work with during recording sessions. He also had a complex family life, including a strained relationship with his daughter, Katharina. His personal life was often described by colleagues as a mix of ambition and deep insecurity. These struggles occurred even as he released successful works like the album *Emotional* and the single "The Sound of Musik."

Falco passed away on February 6, 1998, at the age of 40. He died following a traffic collision in the Dominican Republic involving his Mitsubishi Pajero and a bus. Even after his death, his musical impact continued to grow. His posthumous album, *Out of the Dark*, reached number one in Austria for 21 weeks.

Today, he is remembered through monuments like the statue in Gars am Kamp.
