Jacques Brel was a legendary Belgian singer, actor, and songwriter. He is widely considered a master of the modern chanson, which is a style of French lyric song.

Brel did not just sing; he performed theatrical songs that carried deep emotion. His performances were known for being intense and highly expressive. This style helped him build a devoted following in Belgium and France. Eventually, his influence reached performers and songwriters all over the world.

Brel's early life in Brussels shaped his creative interests. Born on April 8, 1929, in Schaerbeek, he grew up in a strict Catholic household. While he struggled with subjects like arithmetic and Dutch, he excelled in French and history.

He discovered a passion for the stage through his school's drama club. At age 15, he began playing the guitar. By 1947, he was already writing plays and short stories. One notable story, "Frédéric," was published in a school magazine under a pseudonym.

Before his musical fame, Brel followed a more routine path. In 1947, he worked at his father's cardboard factory. His duties involved fixing prices and meeting customers, which he found uninspiring. To find purpose, he joined a Catholic youth organization called La Franche Cordée. This group focused on philanthropy, such as delivering food to orphanages. Brel also served as a corporal in the Belgian air force. During his military service, he met Thérèse "Miche" Michielsen, whom he married in 1950.

Brel's professional music career began in earnest in the early 1950s. After performing at the cabaret La Rose Noire, he signed with Philips Records in 1953. He moved to Paris that autumn to pursue his career. To pay his rent, he even gave guitar lessons to an artist-dancer.

Although he placed 27th out of 28 in the Grand Prix de la Chanson in 1954, the experience was vital. The star Juliette Gréco heard him and requested to sing one of his songs at the Olympia music-hall.

As his career progressed, Brel's musical style became more sophisticated. He met classical pianist François Rauber, who became his long-term accompanist. Rauber provided the formal musical training Brel lacked and created his musical arrangements.

Brel also collaborated with pianist Gérard Jouannest on many classic songs. These partnerships helped him move away from playing the guitar himself. This allowed him to focus entirely on his increasingly theatrical and emotional vocal performances.

Brel's commercial success was immense and global. He sold over 25 million records worldwide, making him the third-best-selling Belgian recording artist of all time. His breakthrough came with the song "Quand on n'a que l'amour," which reached number three on the French charts.

His fame expanded through international tours to places like the Soviet Union, the Middle East, Canada, and the United States. By the 1960s, he was a major international star.

Beyond music, Brel was a successful actor and director. He appeared in ten films during his career. In 1973, his film Le Far West was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. His artistic impact extended to English-speaking musicians as well. Performers like David Bowie, Scott Walker, and Nina Simone were influenced by his work. Many famous singers also recorded English translations of his songs.
