He is celebrated for his influential music and lyrical depth. His work often bridges the gap between popular hits and meaningful social commentary. De Groot is particularly noted for his ability to adapt his style over many decades. He has moved through various musical genres, from folk to rock. This versatility has allowed him to remain a significant figure in Dutch culture. His career is marked by both massive commercial success and artistic reinvention.

His musical process relied heavily on a partnership with lyricist Lennaert Nijgh. The two met while attending the Coornhert Lyceum in Haarlem. Nijgh provided the words, while De Groot focused on the melodies and vocal delivery. This collaboration began during their time at a film academy. Nijgh wrote lyrics that often included social criticism. This helped define De Groot's early reputation as a protest singer. One famous example is his song "Welterusten mijnheer de president," which addressed the Vietnam War. This partnership was a core mechanism of his early creative output.

De Groot's career can be divided into several distinct musical stages. His first stage involved early singles like "Strand" and "Noordzee." This period led to his first major breakthrough with "Meisje van 16." His second stage was defined by the protest singer image. During this time, he released the album "Voor de overlevenden." His third stage saw the influence of the Flower Power movement. This resulted in the album "Picknick," which sounded like the work of George Harrison. He even experimented with different names, such as "Baldwin," for the U.K. market.

His life began during a period of global conflict. De Groot was born in 1944 in the Dutch East Indies. At that time, the region was occupied by Japanese forces. He was born in a concentration camp near Batavia, now known as Jakarta. Following the war, his family returned to the Netherlands in 1946. He spent much of his youth in Haarlem and Heemstede. These early experiences shaped the man who would eventually become a national celebrity. His journey from a wartime birth to musical stardom is quite remarkable.

De Groot has achieved significant milestones throughout his long career. In 1971, his compilation album "Vijf jaar hits" sold more than 100,000 copies. This success led to a resurgence of his popularity on the radio. He has also received prestigious honors, including the Edison and the Gouden Harp. These are important Dutch music awards.

His influence extended to other artists as well. He helped orchestrate the comeback of singer Rob de Nijs by writing several hits. This demonstrates his skill as both a performer and a songwriter.

Even during periods of retirement, De Groot remained active in the arts. After quitting singing in 1984, he explored other creative paths. He composed film scores for movies like "Lost in Amsterdam." He also worked as an actor in musicals.

Furthermore, he used the pseudonym "Frank de Groot" to translate novels. He translated seven books by the author Stephen King into Dutch. He also translated Scott Turow's "Presumed Innocent" in 2011. These activities show his deep connection to language and storytelling.

In his later years, De Groot engaged in new collaborative projects. In 2016, he formed a supergroup called Vreemde Kostgangers. This group included Henny Vrienten and George Kooymans. They performed sold-out tours and released two successful albums.
