Ismail Marzuki was a legendary Indonesian composer, songwriter, and musician. He was a prolific creator who wrote between 202 and 240 songs during his career from 1931 to 1958. His work is deeply significant to the national identity of Indonesia. He composed many famous patriotic songs that express a spirit of unity and harmony. These anthems often feature simple lyrics and melodies. Most of his songs use mid-range scales. This makes his music very easy for people to sing.

Marzuki was a highly skilled multi-instrumentalist. He did not attend a formal music school. Instead, he was a self-taught musician. He was an expert on many different instruments. His collection included the piano, saxophone, guitar, and accordion. He also played the flute, clarinet, mandolin, and harmonium. Beyond playing instruments, he was a talented singer. He possessed a heavy and deep baritone voice. His friends even nicknamed him the "Bing Crosby from Kwitang."

His musical journey began with the Lief Java Orchestra in the mid-1930s. He performed regularly at the NIROM radio station in Tegalega, Bandung. Around 1937, his group moved to a rival station called VORO. Marzuki eventually took on leadership roles in several groups. He led the Jakarta Studio Orchestra and the Bandung Studio Orchestra. During the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, he led the Hoso Kanri Kyoku orchestra. His career was marked by both professional success and strong personal convictions.

Marzuki was born in 1914 in Kwitang, Jakarta. At that time, the city was known as Batavia. He was raised in a wealthy Betawi family. His father owned an automobile repair shop and played the rebana, a type of drum. Marzuki grew up listening to music on the family gramophone. He attended the HIS elementary school in Menteng and the MULO middle school. He became fluent in Indonesian, English, and Dutch. He also studied religion at the Unwanul Wustha Madrasah. In 1931, he wrote his first song, "O Sarinah," which addressed the suffering of the people.

His personal life also influenced his art. In 1940, he married Eulis Zuraidah. She was a Sundanese keroncong singer and orchestra member from Bandung. She inspired his song "Panon Hideung," which is a Sundanese version of "Dark Eyes." The title "Panon Hideung" literally means "Black Eyes." Marzuki was also known for being fiercely nationalistic. During the Indonesian National Revolution, he chose to sell gado-gado with his wife. He did this instead of cooperating with the Dutch-Allied NICA. He also wrote romantic songs, such as "Kalau Anggrek Berbunga" and "Siasat Asmara."

Marzuki's legacy continues to thrive in Indonesian culture. Many of his songs are considered compulsory and are taught in schools. These include "Halo, Halo Bandung," "Gugur Bunga," and "Rayuan Pulau Kelapa." His music has been adapted into many different genres. For example, the singer Chrisye covered his song "Kr. Pasar Gambir dan Stambul Anak Jampang." Classical composer Ananda Sukarlan has even created virtuoso music for piano and orchestra based on Marzuki's songs. This includes works based on "Selendang Sutra" and "Indonesia Pusaka."

Indonesia has honored Marzuki with many prestigious recognitions. In 1961, President Sukarno presented him with the first Wijaya Kusuma award. In 1968, the government opened Taman Ismail Marzuki in central Jakarta. This cultural center and park is named in his honor. Finally, in November 2004, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono declared him a National Hero of Indonesia.
