Besides playing instruments, he was a singer with a deep baritone voice. His friends even gave him a special nickname. They called him the "Bing Crosby from Kwitang." He did not go to a special music school. Instead, he learned how to play instruments by himself.

Marzuki was born in Kwitang, Jakarta, in 1914. At that time, the city was known as Batavia. He grew up in a wealthy Betawi family. His father owned a shop that fixed automobiles. His father also played a musical instrument called the rebana. Marzuki went to school in Menteng and on Mendjangan Street. He learned to speak Indonesian, English, and Dutch fluently. In 1931, he wrote his very first song called "O Sarinah." This song was about people who were suffering.

His music career took him to many different places. In the mid-1930s, he joined the Lief Java Orchestra. He performed at the NIROM radio station in Bandung. Later, his group joined a rival station called VORO. Marzuki eventually led several different orchestras. He led the Jakarta Studio Orchestra and the Bandung Studio Orchestra. Today, many people in Indonesia still cherish his work. Some of his songs are taught in schools. These include "Halo, Halo Bandung" and "Gugur Bunga." His songs are even used in classical music by composers like Ananda Sukarlan. In 1961, President Sukarno gave him the Wijaya Kusuma award.
