His father was a famous historian and journalist. His mother was a painter and a pianist. As a boy, Chico lived in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rome. He loved to play football starting at age four. He also studied literature and music. He learned a style called bossa nova from artists like Tom Jobim. He even tried to study architecture at a university once.

His career has had many hard jobs. During the 1960s, a military government ruled Brazil. This government did not like songs that spoke about social issues. They even frowned upon his play called Roda Viva. Because of this, Chico served a short time in prison. He eventually left Brazil to live in Italy for 18 months. He returned to Brazil in 1970 to keep working. Even when the government tried to stop his music, he kept writing.

Chico found clever ways to keep making art.

In 1974, the government banned his songs. To get around this, he used a fake name. He called himself "Julinho de Adelaide." He even made up a fake life for this person. He wrote songs like "Jorge Maravilha" under this name. Later, people found out it was actually him. He also wrote a song called "Apesar de Você." This song became a famous anthem for people wanting democracy.

Today, Chico is known as a master of his crafts. He has won eleven Brazilian Music Awards for his music. In 2019, he won the Camões Prize for his writing. This is the most important prize for the Portuguese language. The prize was delayed for four years by Jair Bolsonaro. However, Chico finally received it in April 2023. His books and albums, like the 2017 album Caravanas, are still very important. His work connects music, stories, and history together.
