Luiz Gonzaga was a famous Brazilian singer, songwriter, and musician.

He was a very important person in the history of Brazilian music. Many people call him a revolutionary because of his work. He helped bring the music of Northeastern Brazil to the whole country. He made the style called baião very popular. Some people say he was the first big cultural star in Brazil. His music was loved by many different people.

Gonzaga learned to play the accordion as a young child. His father, Januário José dos Santos, was a farmer and an accordion player. Luiz used to play with his father at parties and religious celebrations. Later, Luiz served in the military and learned to play the cornet. After the army, he moved to Rio de Janeiro. He performed in streets and bars to make a living. He noticed that people from the northeast missed their home music.

To help people feel at home, he played styles like xaxados, baiões, chamegos, and cocos. He became a star on the radio and made many records. In 1943, he started wearing traditional northeastern costumes for his shows. He also began to write his own songs. His most famous hit is "Asa Branca," which he wrote with Humberto Teixeira. It was recorded in 1947 and many artists have covered it since.

Gonzaga created a special musical group that was very new for its time. He used the accordion, the zabumba drum, and the triangle. This group of instruments became the base for Forró music. This happened ten years before the Beatles became famous with their rock ensemble. In 1984, he won the Shell prize for Brazilian Popular Music. He was only the fourth artist to ever receive this honor.

Even when musical tastes changed in the 1960s, people still loved his music. He toured the countryside to reach his fans. Many famous singers later sang his songs, which helped him become popular again. His son, Gonzaguinha, was also a well-known singer and composer. Luiz Gonzaga passed away in 1989 at the age of 76. Today, a dam in Brazil is named in his honor to remember him.
