He appeared in over 200 films during his long career. Many fans called him "Ken-san" out of respect and affection. He was best known for a serious and quiet acting style. This style made him seem very strong and steady on screen. He became one of the most important stars in Japanese history.

Takakura's journey to fame started with a sudden choice. He was a student at Meiji University in Tokyo. In 1955, he went to an audition at the Toei Film Company. He was actually trying to apply for a management job there. The company saw his natural talent and hired him instead. He made his first film appearance in 1956 in Denko Karate Uchi. This was the start of a very busy life in movies.

His life began in 1931 in Nakama, Fukuoka. He was the second of four children in his family. His father, Toshiro Oda, served on the battleship Hiei in the Navy. His mother, Takano, worked as a teacher. As a young boy, Ken dealt with a sickness. His father encouraged him to join sports to stay active. He became a global star through many different films. In 1965, he starred in the famous movie Abashiri Prison. He also acted in many movies made in the United States. These included the film Black Rain in 1989 and the comedy Mr. Baseball in 1992. He was very popular in China as well. His 1976 crime drama, Kimi yo Fundo no Kawa o Watare, was a major hit there. This film was the first foreign movie shown after the Cultural Revolution.

Takakura earned many great honors for his hard work. He won the Japan Academy Prize for best leading actor four times. This tied him with Koji Yakusho for the most wins.
