Luiz Gonzaga was a famous Brazilian singer and musician.

He was born in 1912. His father was a farmer who played the accordion. Luiz learned to play this instrument at a young age. He played at parties and religious events with his father.

Later, Luiz moved to the city of Rio de Janeiro. He noticed people missed the music from their homes. He began to play styles like baião. This music came from the northeast part of Brazil. He often wore traditional clothes when he performed. He played the accordion with a drum called a zabumba. He also used a small metal triangle. This group of instruments helped create a new sound for pop music.

One of his most famous songs is "Asa Branca." It was recorded in 1947. Many other artists have played this song too. Luiz won a big prize called the Shell prize in 1984. People in Brazil still honor him today. A dam was even named after him.

His son, Gonzaguinha, was also a well-known singer.
