Sydney began his work with the Villas Boas brothers. Later, he worked with a group called FUNAI. He saw how hard life was for the Arara people. New diseases and bad changes hurt them. This made Sydney want to change how the government helped.

In 1987, he became a director for a new group. This group was for tribes living alone. His work helped double the size of protected lands. He led many trips into the deep woods. He wanted to keep tribes safe from outsiders. He even helped make peace with the Korubo people.

Sydney has won many prizes for his work. Time Kids Magazine called him a "Hero of the Planet." The United Nations named him "Hero of the year" in 2001. He still works to defend these tribes today. He speaks up when people try to take their land. He wants the tribes to have a safe future.
