Long ago, they lived in the Amazon rainforest. Later, they moved to the coast of Brazil. Many Tupi lived in tribes. Each tribe had 300 to 2,000 people. They were great at farming. They grew corn, beans, and peanuts.

In the year 1500, there were about 1 million Tupi. Then, people from Portugal arrived. These settlers changed Tupi life. They made the Tupi work on farms. They also brought new sicknesses. These diseases killed many Tupi people.

Many Tupi families mixed with Portuguese families. This created a new group of people.

This helped the Portuguese stay in Brazil. Even though many Tupi died, their culture stayed. Many words in Brazil come from Tupi. We use Tupi words for animals like the macaw. We also use them for food like pineapple.
