People settled the islands in different waves. Some came from the west. Others came from the east. One group was the Lapita culture. They moved into eastern Micronesia a long time ago.

Micronesian people live on two types of islands. Some live on high islands. These islands have lots of food and many people. Others live on low islands called atolls.

Low islanders must be very good at sailing. They use canoes to find food and travel. This helps them survive on small islands. Many groups live here. There are the Chamorros, the Marshallese, and the Chuukese. Each group has its own way of life and its own language.
