The island is the largest in Micronesia. It is also the largest of the Mariana Islands.

The Chamorro people first settled Guam a long time ago. They arrived about 3,500 years ago. They built homes on tall stone pillars. These are called latte stones.

Later, explorers from Spain arrived. Spain ruled the island for many years. In 1898, the United States took control of Guam.

During World War II, Japan captured the island. American forces took it back in 1944. People there celebrate this as Liberation Day. Today, many people live in the village of Dededo. The capital city is Hagåtña.
