Because it is so close to the International Date Line, people use the motto "Where America's Day Begins." This refers to how the island sees the new day first.

The island's story began with the Chamorro people. They settled Guam and the Mariana Islands about 3,500 years ago. These settlers were part of the Austronesian peoples. They traveled across the ocean from places like the Philippines.

Ancient Chamorro society had four different social classes. Some people lived in coastal villages to fish. Others lived in the island's interior. They built homes on special stone pillars called latte stones. These pillars had a limestone base and a large capstone on top.

Explorers from Europe arrived much later. Ferdinand Magellan visited the island in March 1521. He was a Portuguese explorer sailing for Spain. Spain officially claimed the island in 1565. For many years, Guam was an important stop for Spanish ships. These ships traveled between Acapulco and Manila.

Spain fully colonized the island in 1668. This era changed much of the local culture and life.

In 1898, the United States took control of Guam. This happened after the Spanish-American War. The island was transferred to the U.S. Navy in December 1898.

During World War II, the island faced a hard time. Japan captured Guam on December 8, 1941. They occupied the island for two and a half years. American forces recaptured the island on July 21, 1944.
