These islands are spread out across the ocean. Some people live on the main islands. Others live on the smaller islands and atolls. The state is divided into 21 different municipalities. Each area has its own villages and customs.

History tells us that people first came here from the Malay Archipelago. Around 950 AD, the Yapese Empire was very strong. It controlled 1,300 km of the western Pacific Ocean. This empire included many islands between Yap and Chuuk.

People used special stone money called rai stones. These stones were very valuable because they were hard to get. Travelers had to go to Palau to find the right rocks. This was a very dangerous job for the explorers.

Many different countries have ruled these islands over time. The Portuguese were the first Westerners to visit in 1525. Later, Spain ruled the islands for a long time.

Then, the German Empire took control in 1899. Japan occupied the area starting in 1914. During World War II, the United States took control in 1944. Eventually, Yap became part of the Federated States of Micronesia. It gained official independence in 1986.

Today, Yap has a very unique way of governing. It has four different branches of government. One branch is for the state's elected leaders. Another branch is for the courts.
