Spanish explorers first reached these islands in the early 1500s. Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the Philippines in 1521. He met a leader named Rajah Humabon in Cebu. Later, Miguel López de Legazpi started the first Spanish settlement in 1565. This settlement was called San Miguel in Cebu.

A man named Andrés de Urdaneta found a sea path to Mexico. This path allowed large ships to travel across the Pacific Ocean. These ships were called Manila-Acapulco galleons. They carried silk, spices, and silver between Asia and the Americas.

Managing these far-away lands was a big job. For a long time, the lands were ruled through Mexico City. This was called the Viceroyalty of New Spain.

The main government office was in Manila. It was called the Captaincy General. In 1583, Spain also set up a high court called the Real Audiencia. This court helped with laws and justice. The King of Spain even called himself the King of the East and West Indies.

Life in the islands changed as people and goods moved.

The islands also saw many battles. The Dutch tried to take control during the 1600s. Later, the British occupied Manila for twenty months during the Seven Years' War. Spain eventually got the land back in 1764.

Major changes happened to the government in the 1800s. First, Mexico won its independence in 1821. After that, Manila reported directly to Madrid in Spain. The end of Spanish rule came during the Spanish-American War in 1898.
