This era is also called the Age of Exploration. During this time, sailors from European countries traveled to far-off places. They explored new lands and built colonies. These travelers also conquered many regions across the globe. This period helped connect parts of the world that were once isolated. It laid the very first groundwork for our modern globalized world.

Exploration changed how people lived and traded. Sailors looked for new maritime routes to reach the East Indies. These paths allowed for much more international trade. The expansion of these trade networks created a connected global economy. This era also saw the rise of colonial empires. Many European states began using colonialism as a way to govern. This movement changed the power balance between different lands. It created new centers of power far beyond Europe.

Portugal led many of the earliest ocean voyages. Their exploration started with trips to the Macaronesian islands. This included the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores. In 1434, they began sailing along the coast of West Africa. A famous explorer named Vasco da Gama reached India in 1498. This trip opened a direct sea route to the Indian Ocean. Later, Pedro Álvares Cabral reached South America in 1500. By 1512, the Portuguese reached the valuable Spice Islands.

Spain also sent many famous explorers across the sea. Christopher Columbus sailed west between 1492 and 1504. His voyages marked the start of colonization in the Americas. Another major trip was the Magellan expedition from 1519 to 1522. Under Juan Sebastián Elcano, this group completed the first circumnavigation of the globe.

Spanish explorers also conquered Mexico between 1519 and 1521. They later moved into Peru from 1532 to 1533. The Manila galleon trade route even linked Asia and the Americas. This route lasted from 1565 all the way to 1815.

These travels started the Columbian exchange. This was a massive movement between the Old World and the New World. Plants, animals, and cultures moved between Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. However, this time was also very difficult for many people. New diseases spread to Native Americans and caused many deaths. Europeans also practiced widespread enslavement and military conquest of Indigenous peoples.

Despite these hardships, the era helped map the world more clearly. Maps grew from simple shapes into the outlines we recognize today.
