Eastern world

geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Eastern world is a very big idea. It is an umbrella term for many different places. This term covers many cultures and social structures. It also includes many nations and philosophical systems. People often use it to talk about Asia. It can also include the Arab world. The Mediterranean region is sometimes part of it too.

How we define the East can change. Sometimes it is about a literal place on a map. In the past, it meant the eastern part of the Old World. This was used to contrast Asia with Western Europe. Today, the term is often about culture instead of geography. The boundary between East and West is often historical. It is not always a straight line on a map.

History has shaped how we see these regions. Long ago, people used terms like Orient and Occident. These words came from European history. The divide was often about the difference between Christian Europe and other cultures. Later, the idea of an Eastern sphere became global. This happened as Europeans traveled to the Americas. Scholars used a way of thinking called Orientalism to study it.

Many different things make up Eastern culture. It includes social norms and ethical values. It also covers traditional customs and belief systems. You can see these in political systems and old technologies. Many regions share things like Buddhism or Hinduism. Some people use Chinese characters or Brahmic scripts. These traditions help create a diverse cultural world.

Geography can sometimes be a bit tricky. Australia and New Zealand are very close to the East. However, they are usually grouped with the Western world. This is because they were founded as British colonies. The Philippines is also in the Eastern world geographically. Yet, its culture has Western parts due to history. This shows how travel and old ties change things.
