The Earth is a huge sphere. We can split it into two halves called hemispheres. One of these halves is the Eastern Hemisphere.

This side is east of the prime meridian. That line crosses Greenwich in London, United Kingdom. It is also west of the antimeridian. That line crosses the Pacific Ocean. The Eastern Hemisphere includes many large areas. It covers Africa and Eurasia. It also includes Australia. Some people call it the "Old World."

We use special lines to mark these halves. The prime meridian is at 0 degrees longitude. The antimeridian is at 180 degrees longitude. These lines are not natural like the equator. The equator is a real way to split North and South. Instead, these lines are an agreed rule. People chose these lines to divide east from west. This helped everyone use the same system for time.

People met to decide on these rules long ago. This happened at the International Meridian Conference. The meeting was held in Washington, D.C. in 1884. They adopted ideas from a Canadian engineer named Sir Sandford Fleming. Before this, many countries used their own lines. Each place used its own local noon to set time. This made travel and maps very hard. Now, the world uses these standard rules.

The Eastern Hemisphere has a lot of land. It is larger than the Western Hemisphere. Because it is so big, it has many habitats. This means there are many different places for life. The center of this hemisphere is in the Indian Ocean. It sits where the equator meets the 90th meridian east. This spot is 910 km west of Indonesia. The closest land is Simeulue Island.

Most people on our planet live in this half. About 82 percent of all humans live here. Only 18 percent live in the Western Hemisphere. Some countries sit in both halves at once. The United Kingdom passes through the prime meridian. France and Spain also have parts in both sides. One country is very special. Kiribati has the equator and the antimeridian crossing it. It is the only country in four hemispheres!
