This side sits east of the prime meridian. That is a line that crosses London. It also sits west of the antimeridian. That line crosses the Pacific Ocean. These lines were chosen in 1884. They help us tell time and find places.

The Eastern Hemisphere has a lot of land. It is bigger than the Western Hemisphere. It includes Africa and Eurasia. It also includes Australia. Because there is so much land, there are many habitats. A habitat is a place where plants and animals live.

Most people on Earth live here. About 82 percent of all humans live in this half. The center of this side is in the Indian Ocean. It is near a place called the Ninety East Ridge. The closest land is Simeulue Island.

Some countries sit in both halves. For example, the United Kingdom passes through the prime meridian. The country Kiribati is very special. It is the only country in four different hemispheres!
