The Earth is a giant sphere that we can split into two halves. One of these halves is called the Western Hemisphere.

It is defined by two imaginary lines. The first is the Prime Meridian. The second is the 180th meridian. This hemisphere sits west of the Prime Meridian. It also sits east of the 180th meridian.

Some people use the term to mean just the Americas. However, this half of the world includes much more than that. It is a massive part of our planet.

Many different lands sit within this hemisphere. It includes almost all of the Americas. You will also find parts of Europe and Africa here. Some islands and lands in Oceania are part of it too. Even the eastern tip of Russia is included.

A large part of Antarctica is also in this half. Some parts of the Aleutian Islands are not included. This means the Western Hemisphere is very diverse. It holds many different types of land and water.

If you looked for the very center, you would find it in the ocean. The center of the Western Hemisphere is in the Pacific Ocean. It sits at the intersection of the Equator and the 90th meridian west. This spot is near the Galápagos Islands.

The nearest land to this center point is Genovesa Island. This area is far from big cities. It is a quiet and watery part of the world. The ocean covers much of this central space.

There are many amazing landmarks in this hemisphere. The highest mountain is Aconcagua. It sits in the Andes of Argentina.

In North America, you can find very tall structures. The CN Tower in Toronto is the tallest freestanding structure. One World Trade Center in New York City is the tallest building. These places show how big and varied the land can be. From high mountains to tall towers, there is much to see.

Some countries are so large that they sit in both halves of the Earth. For example, the United Kingdom has land in both the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. France also has parts of its land in the Western Hemisphere. Even the country of Kiribati is very special. It is the only country located in four different hemispheres!

This happens because the Equator and the 180th meridian cross through it. It is a very unique place on our map.
