The Western Hemisphere is one of the two halves of the Earth.

Geographers define this half using two imaginary lines called meridians. The Western Hemisphere lies west of the Prime Meridian. It also lies east of the 180th meridian. This division creates a specific area on the global map. While many people in the United States use the term to mean the Americas, it actually includes much more. It is a geographic term that covers various continents and oceans.

The lands within this hemisphere are very diverse. It includes the Americas, but it also reaches into other regions. You will find the westernmost parts of Europe and Africa here. Some islands and territories in Oceania are also included. The extreme eastern tip of the Russian mainland is part of this half. Even a large part of Antarctica sits within the Western Hemisphere. However, some parts of the Aleutian Islands are excluded from this definition. This shows how complex global boundaries can be.

To find the exact center of this hemisphere, you must look to the sea. The center point is located in the Pacific Ocean. It sits where the Equator meets the 90th meridian west. This location is near the Galápagos Islands. The nearest piece of land to this center is Genovesa Island. This area is mostly water and very far from major landmasses. It serves as the mathematical heart of the Western Hemisphere.

There are different ways to define these boundaries. Some sources use different lines to try and match the Americas more closely. One method uses the 20th meridian west and the 160th meridian east. This definition changes which lands are included. It would exclude the mainlands of Europe and Africa. However, it would still include some islands from those continents. It also keeps more of eastern Russia and Oceania in the hemisphere. No single definition can include all of the Americas while excluding all other land.

The Western Hemisphere contains many impressive physical and man-made landmarks. The highest mountain is Aconcagua. It is located in the Andes mountains of Argentina. In terms of tall structures, the CN Tower in Toronto is the tallest freestanding structure. If you are looking for the tallest building, that is One World Trade Center in New York City. These landmarks show the scale of the hemisphere. They represent both natural wonders and human engineering.

Many sovereign states are split between the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. This happens when a country's territory crosses a meridian. For example, the United Kingdom passes through the Prime Meridian. Most of the country and its territories are in the Western Hemisphere. France also has land in both halves. About one-third of France, including cities like Nantes and Bordeaux, is in the West. Algeria is another example, with about one-quarter of the country in the Western Hemisphere. Some countries are even more divided by the 180th meridian. The United States has parts like Guam and Wake Island in the Western Hemisphere. Russia also has a portion in the West near Chukotka.

Some countries have very unique positions on the globe. Kiribati is a particularly special case. It is the only country located in four different hemispheres. This occurs because both the Equator and the 180th meridian cross through its territory. This placement makes it a rare geographic outlier. Other nations like Fiji and Tuvalu also sit near these major lines. Understanding these positions helps us see how the Earth is interconnected. It shows how a single nation can span multiple halves of the world.
