The Southern Hemisphere is the half of Earth located south of the equator.

It serves as a massive geographic region containing the South Pole at its center. This hemisphere includes the entire continent of Antarctica and the entire continent of Australia. It also contains about 90% of South America and roughly one-third of Africa. Some islands off the coast of Asia are also part of this region. The Southern Ocean, the South Atlantic Ocean, and the South Pacific Ocean cover much of its surface. Most of the Pacific Islands in Oceania and the nation of New Zealand are also located here.

Water dominates the landscape of the Southern Hemisphere. Its surface is 80.9% water, which is much higher than the 60.7% found in the Northern Hemisphere. Because of this, the region contains only 32.7% of Earth's total land. This high percentage of ocean affects the local climate. Water has a higher specific heat than land, meaning it heats and cools more slowly. Consequently, climates in the Southern Hemisphere tend to be slightly milder than similar latitudes in the north. The primary exception is Antarctica, which is colder than the Arctic.

Physical phenomena in this hemisphere follow unique patterns. The Sun moves from east to west through the northern sky. If you are south of the Tropic of Capricorn, the Sun may appear directly overhead at midday. This movement causes shadows on a sundial to turn in an anticlockwise direction. The Coriolis effect also creates distinct patterns for weather systems. This effect causes cyclones and tropical storms to spin clockwise. During a solar eclipse, the Moon appears to move from left to right across the Sun's disc.

The night sky offers different views than the northern regions. The Sagittarius constellation, which includes the galactic centre, is a southern constellation. You can also observe the Magellanic Clouds from this hemisphere. Many observers find the skies are clearer and the stars are more numerous and bright. In certain areas, you may see the Aurora australis, which is a natural light display in the sky.

Biological diversity in the south includes many unique species. For example, the penguin is an animal found almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere. Many forests here have special features, such as the Nothofagus beech species found in Chile and Australia. The eucalyptus tree is native to Australia but is now used for biofuel and pulp in other regions. The Southern Hemisphere also contains the submerged continent of Zealandia. This includes New Zealand, New Caledonia, and Norfolk Island.

Human history in the region is very deep. The Norte Chico and Casma–Sechin civilizations in Peru built cities and pyramids as early as 3600 BCE. The city of Bogor in Java is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities, founded in 669 CE. Some evidence suggests Zanzibar, an ancient port in East Africa, may be even older. Before the Age of Discovery, many areas like Antarctica and the Galápagos Islands had no human contact. Today, more than 850 million people live here, representing 10–12% of the global population.

Modern demographics show a wide variety of nations and cultures. Indonesia is the most populous country in the hemisphere, with 275 million people. Brazil is the largest country by land area, with over 203 million residents. Tanzania is the most populous country located entirely within the Southern Hemisphere. Major cities like Jakarta, São Paulo, and Kinshasa-Brazzaville serve as massive metropolitan hubs. While some nations like Australia and New Zealand are highly developed, others in Africa and Oceania face more challenges. Despite this, the Southern Hemisphere remains a vital part of global economy and culture.
