The Southern Hemisphere is the half of Earth that sits south of the equator.

It is a massive region that includes the South Pole at its center. This part of the world is mostly made of water. In fact, 80.9% of its surface is ocean. This is much more water than the 60.7% found in the Northern Hemisphere. Because water heats and cools more slowly than land, the weather here tends to be slightly milder. The only big exception is Antarctica, which is much colder than the Arctic.

Nature works in a special way in the Southern Hemisphere. The Sun moves from east to west through the northern sky. If you watch shadows from a sundial, they turn anticlockwise during the day. Even the weather patterns are different due to the Coriolis effect. This effect causes tropical storms and cyclones to spin clockwise.

The night sky is also a wonderful sight to see. You can find the Sagittarius constellation and the Magellanic Clouds here. Many people say the skies are clear and the stars are very bright. You might even see the beautiful Aurora australis dancing in the sky.

People have lived in these lands for a very long time. Some of the oldest civilizations were the Norte Chico and Casma–Sechin cultures in Peru. They built cities and pyramids as far back as 3600 BCE. There is also a very old city called Bogor in Java. It was founded in the year 669 CE. Some ancient texts suggest that Zanzibar might even be older. This ancient port was mentioned in a Greco-Roman text from between 1 and 100 CE.

Today, more than 850 million people live in the Southern Hemisphere. This is about 10% to 12% of all people on Earth. Indonesia is the most populous country in this half of the world. Brazil is the largest country when you measure its land area. Many people speak Portuguese here, especially in Brazil. You can find huge cities like Jakarta and São Paulo. There are also famous places for travelers, like Bali, Sydney, and the Galápagos Islands.

Life in the Southern Hemisphere is tied to the seasons of the Earth. Because of how the Earth tilts, summer happens from December to February. Winter occurs from June to August. The seasons change during the equinoxes in March and September. Many unique animals call this place home, like the penguin. You can also find special trees like the eucalyptus in Australia. Even though it has less land than the north, it is a vital part of our world.
