Population density is a way to measure how crowded a place is.

It tells us the number of people living in a specific unit of land. Most people use square kilometres or square miles for this math. Scientists use this idea in a field called population geography. It is not just for humans, though. It can also be used for other living things. In plant science, it is called plant density.

To find the density, you divide the population by the land area. You can include seas or oceans in your math if you want. Sometimes people only look at the land. If you use all of Earth's land and water, the density is low. The total world population is about 8,000,000,000 people. The Earth's total area is about 510,000,000 square kilometres. This makes the worldwide human density about 15.7 people per square kilometre. If you only count land, the number goes up to about 17.2.

Different parts of the world have very different numbers. Most people live in the Northern Hemisphere. This is because 67% of Earth's land is there. About 95% of all people live on just 10% of the land. Some places are very crowded, like city-states and microstates.

Monaco is the most crowded nation in Europe. Many busy cities are in Asia. You can also find crowded cities in Africa and South America. Examples include Lagos, Cairo, Bogotá, and Lima. Some cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi are growing very fast.

Other places are very empty. Deserts have low density because they do not get enough rain for crops. Mongolia is the least densely populated country. Its geography creates a very harsh climate. For animals, being too spread out can be a hard job. This is called the Allee effect. It can make it hard for animals to find mates. It can also lead to inbreeding. These things can make it harder for a group to survive.

There are many ways to look at these numbers. Arithmetic density is the most common way. You can also look at physiological density, which uses farm land. Some people study urban density to see how many people live in cities.

You can even look at ecological optimum. This is the density a place can support with its natural resources. These different tools help us understand how people and nature live together.
