Population growth is the increase in the number of people in a group.

This growth can be measured as a rate. A rate shows how much a population changes over a set time. It is often shown as a percentage. If the rate is positive, the number of people is going up. If the rate is negative, the number of people is going down. Scientists look at these changes to understand our world.

Many things helped the human population grow over time. New ways to grow food helped a lot. Better sanitation and medical tools also helped. These tools helped reduce mortality, which means fewer people died. One important discovery was the Haber process. It was named after a German chemist named Fritz Haber. This process helped people grow much more food. It helped the world population jump from 1.6 billion in 1900 to 7.7 billion by 2019.

History shows us how these changes happened. The world population began growing steadily around the year 1350. This was after the end of the Black Death. Growth became very fast during the Industrial Revolution. The most significant increase happened since the 1950s. This was due to medical advances and better farming. A scientist named Thomas McKeown studied these changes. He thought better nutrition helped people live longer. He also looked at how childhood mortality changed.

Today, the world population is very large. In 1800, there were only 1 billion people. By 2025, the number reached 8.2 billion. The growth rate peaked in 1963 at 2.2% per year. Now, the rate is much lower at about 0.85% per year. The United Nations says the population might peak in the mid-2080s. They think it could reach 10.3 billion people then. Some groups think it might reach 11.2 billion by the end of the century.

Changes in population affect the whole planet. More people can lead to more use of natural resources. This can cause problems like climate change. It can also lead to biodiversity loss. Because of this, people talk about sustainability. This means living in a way that protects the Earth. The Sustainable Development Goals help with this. They aim to improve life for everyone. They also want to reduce the impact on our environment.
