These lands were called the Spanish East Indies. They included the Philippines, Guam, and the Mariana Islands. They also ruled Palau and parts of Taiwan.

Spanish explorers first reached the area in the 1500s. Ferdinand Magellan reached the islands in 1521. Later, Miguel López de Legazpi started a settlement in 1565. This first home was in Cebu. Soon, the capital moved to Manila.

Trade was very important. Large ships called galleons sailed across the Pacific. They carried silk, spices, and silver. They linked Asia to Mexico. This trade brought new foods and languages to the islands.
