These lands are in parts of Belgium, Luxembourg, and France today. Brussels was the main city.

In 1556, the lands passed to Philip II of Spain. This started a time called the Spanish Netherlands. Soon, a big fight began. It was called the Eighty Years' War. It started in 1568. Some northern lands wanted to rule themselves. They became the Dutch Republic in 1581. The southern lands stayed under Spanish rule.

Later, two leaders named Isabella and Albert ruled.

Their rule brought peace. This helped the area grow. A famous artist named Peter Paul Rubens lived then.

After Albert died, Spain took control again. But nearby France began to take parts of the land. Many wars changed the borders. In 1714, the lands went to the Austrian Habsburgs.
