This region is surrounded by the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It borders Kumamoto Prefecture to the north and Miyazaki Prefecture to the northeast. Because of its location, it has often been a gateway to Japan.

Nature is very active in this part of the world. Kagoshima is home to a chain of volcanoes. Some are active, while others are dormant.

The most famous is Sakurajima, which towers over Kagoshima Bay. This volcano puffs out smoke and ash almost every day. In 1914, a huge eruption connected the mountain to the mainland forever. The volcanic ash makes the soil very rich for farming. This helps farmers grow massive daikon radishes that are the size of basketballs.

History has shaped this land in many ways. Long ago, this area was the core of the Satsuma Domain. This was one of the most important lands during the Edo period. Kagoshima City was also a major naval base in the 20th century. It was the home of a famous admiral named Tōgō Heihachirō. The region played a key role in the Meiji Restoration. This was a big change in how Japan was ruled. The area has seen many important events throughout its long past.

Many people live and work in Kagoshima. The population is about 1,527,019 people.
