The weather is subtropical. This means the summers are hot and humid. The winters stay mild. It rains a lot throughout the year. Most of the rain falls in May, June, and September.

The island has a very long history. In the Yayoi period, people made beautiful items. They made engraved pendants called magatama. Later, the imperial court in Japan made contact with the island. In 677, the court even held a banquet for the islanders. By the year 702, the island became Tane Province. This province lasted until the year 824. Much later, the island became part of the Shimazu Estate. A group called the Tanegashima clan ruled the island for a long time. They ruled until the Meiji restoration took place.

Tanegashima is very famous for a big change in history. In 1543, European traders arrived on the island. These traders were Portuguese. They brought guns to Japan for the first time. Two men named António Mota and Francisco Zeimoto are credited with this. Because of this event, people in Japan called guns "tanegashima." The traders also brought soap and tobacco. These were goods that people in medieval Japan had never seen before. The island also helped trade between China and other parts of Japan.

Craftsmen on the island are famous for making tools. They use special ways to work with iron sand. This skill has been around since about 1185. It started when the Taira clan moved to the island. They brought skilled workers from Kyoto with them. Even today, many people on the island speak with a Kyoto accent. They make very sharp knives used by chefs. They also make special scissors called Tane-basami. These are used for the art of bonsai trees.

Today, the island is a place for looking at the stars. The Tanegashima Space Center is at the southeast end. It is the largest space center in Japan. An agency called JAXA runs the center. They use it to build, test, and launch satellites. They also fire rocket engines there. You can see different rockets like the H3 launch from the complex. There is even a museum about rocket history nearby. Every March, people can join the Tanegashima "Rocket Marathon." It is an exciting place for science and sports.
